By thinking before printing and picking the right paper for the job, you can decrease your office’s environmental footprint. Here are four simple tips for smart paper use.
- Use both sides of the page.
It’s called duplex printing and it’s the best way to reduce paper use. Choosing copiers, digital printers, and multifunction devices that can print on both sides of the paper is always a good decision. Adding duplex as your default mode will also save even more paper. - Be selective: Print only what you need, when you need it.
Preview your print to avoid printing drafts that will be discarded. Print on demand instead of stockpiling forms, letterhead, or instructions that will go out of date. - Use the right paper.
There are multiple options that promote sound environmental practices. Go with papers that are certified through global organizations, like the Forest Stewardship Council or the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. Both of these organizations have strict international standards for sustainable forestry. - Collect used paper so the fiber can be used again.
Recycling the fiber saves trees, reduces energy and water use, requires fewer chemicals, and keeps paper out of landfills.
Even Xerox, one of the world’s largest suppliers of paper for office printers and copiers, is on board with this idea. “It may be a surprise that Xerox is concerned about excessive paper use. But, the hallmark of our business has always been operating in an environmentally responsible way. That means holding our suppliers to tough standards on how they make paper, improving forest management and protecting endangered forests. Through Xerox innovation, we help our customers minimize their impact on the environment while meeting their business needs.”
